Abstract

The Oxford Conception Study is a randomized, controlled trial designed to investigate whether information about the potential fertile time will increase the conception rate in women wishing to conceive. Three different versions of a fertility monitor were developed for the study. The monitor measures urinary estrogen metabolites (estrone-3-glucuronide, or E3G) and luteinizing hormone (LH). The monitor display indicates high or low fertility. One third of women were randomly assigned to receive information from the fertility monitor about the early fertile time, one third received information about the late fertile time, and one third did not receive any information from the fertility monitor but still did all the urine tests (the last group was the control group). The study commenced at the end of 2002. Recruitment was finalized in January 2006. A total of 1,453 women were recruited into the study. All the women were followed up for six cycles or until they were pregnant, whichever came first. The design and recruitment experience of the trial will be described. The investigators found that a large number of women are willing to use the Internet for enrolling in a clinical study of means to assist conception. This finding is important because the successful recruitment of volunteers is an increasingly difficult aspect of many clinical trials. The inability to recruit volunteers often causes significant delays in amassing robust evidence and in getting that new evidence translated into clinical practice. The experience of the Oxford Conception Study has been that website recruitment increased the recruitment rate efficiently, with high retention rates. Thus, the Oxford Conception Study suggests a major role for Internet-based recruiting for future studies.
