Do and how we understand the needs of our students?
Akbari, Mostafa and Thüs, Hendrik (2011) Do and how we understand the needs of our students? p. 1. In: Proceedings of the The PLE Conference 2011, 10th - 12th July 2011, Southampton, UK.
Past year at the PLE Conference there was a „What is a Personal Learning Environment?“ Workshop. This was a try to find a Definition of a PLE. We will to offer this year a session for finding the challenges for building a suited PLE. The session should focus on PLE for students in higher education. In this area we have the conflict between PLE-Systems provided by the institution of the university, on the other side we can teach the students to use Web 2.0 Tools and build their own PLEs. A problem which both ideas have to face is that most students do not use most of the online tools for collaboration or learning. We show past year in a session “How Do Our Students Use Their PLEs?” some figure and facts about how our students use those tools. We conduct this year again a survey with over 400 students. Still most of the tools are not know, but we can see that there are tools which seem to have a real benefit for the students. E.g. Dropbox was last year nearly unknown and now 15% of them use it daily and other 14% minimum once a week. Also mobile devices become more popular among the students.
